baby food

Today I made my first real attempts at making baby food! Thanks to Hill's Kitchen, I had just the goods to get it done... and I can't recommend the Lekue steamer basket ENOUGH! I had a full butternut squash steamed down in about 8 minutes.

Just a few easy steps:

peeled the butternut squash using the Kyocera ceramic pealer
cubed the butternut squash to roughly 1/2 inch pieces using a santoku style knife
added 1/4 cup of water and the squash to the steamer basket
microwave for 8 minutes!!

Once the squash was steamed I used the Cuisinart hand immersion blender to puree everything down. I added all of the steam water to the squash to keep the puree at the correct consistency.

Since it isn't time to introduce a new food yet (we are still on pears and used basically the same process above to prepare them), I am freezing the puree for later next week! I love these Tovolo ice cube trays cause they freeze 1 inch cubes which make for the perfect serving size!

And, ladies and gentlemen, that's baby food using normal kitchen items and not one of those crazy expensive baby food makers!

Plus side, I saved half of the squash to make butternut squash soup for me later!!
